The collaborative approach

To support its volunteers and members, Sailing for the Disabled partnered with Disability Awareness, a specialist training provider, alongside Governance People Limited.

The collaboration brought together:

  • Professional instructional design and eLearning delivery expertise from Governance People
  • Specialist subject-matter knowledge from Disability Awareness
  • A shared commitment to inclusion, accessibility, and community impact from all partners

The Solution

A bespoke online Disability Awareness Training course was created specifically for Sailing for the Disabled.

The solution comprised:

  • An accessible, self-paced online learning experience
  • Clear, practical guidance tailored to the charity’s sailing environment
  • Training suitable for both new volunteers and established members
  • A format that allows learners to revisit content for refreshers at any time

To support delivery, a brand-new, fully hosted LMS was implemented to make the course easily available to the charity’s volunteers.

Outcomes and impact

The new online training programme has delivered both immediate and longer-term benefits, including:

  • Increased confidence among volunteers
  • A more consistent understanding of disability awareness across the organisation
  • A scalable training approach capable of supporting future growth

It is also hoped that the initiative will inspire other Island-based organisations to broaden their understanding of disability awareness and consider accessible online training solutions.

Why this collaboration worked

This collaboration was successful because it combined:

  • Strong subject-matter expertise
  • Professional eLearning design and delivery
  • A shared commitment to accessibility and inclusion
  • A values-led, pro bono approach focused on impact rather than profit

For Sailing for the Disabled, the partnership delivered a practical and sustainable training solution. For Governance People, it demonstrated how digital learning can be used to support community organisations alongside work in regulated industries.
